Consumer experiences with in-app purchases
Overview
Mobile apps are often available to download free in online stores, but sometime require significant in-app purchases to maximise the experience of the app. In-app purchases may include paying to use an ad-free version of the app, buying extra lives in a game, or paying to access extra content.
Why your views matter
We are collecting information about Apple and Android apps that might be appealing to children under 16 years old – particularly games. We want to examine them under the Australian Consumer Law to check whether there are adequate disclosures and safeguards around apps represented as “free” or cheap that then contain invitations to spend money when using the app. Your feedback will support an international consumer protection effort.
